Registering to vote as a student

by Cate Frist

The United States presidential election is coming up this fall, with Election Day taking place on Tuesday, Nov. 5. This is a guide for students on how to register to vote, whether you are a California resident, an out-of-state student or studying abroad this quarter.

For all students, you must register before you can take to the polls and vote. To register to vote, follow this link. On the website, select your home state from the drop-down menu. Each state has its own registration deadline. Make sure to find out the rules for your home state.

California Residents:

To register to vote as a California resident, you can use the California Online Registration website. The last day to register to vote is Oct. 21. To register online, follow this link. Select your language preference, click on “Register to Vote Now” and follow the prompts. The polls will open at 7 a.m. PST and will close at 8 p.m. PST on Election Day. UCLA Out-of-State Students:

The states vary in their rules for requesting absentee ballots and vote-by-mail requirements. To learn your state’s rules, go to the “Can I Vote” website. From there, select your state and follow the directions on how to register to vote and request your absentee ballot.

UCLA Students Abroad:

For students studying abroad, yes, it is still possible to vote in the upcoming election! The first step is to register to vote (here). For Americans living abroad, requesting an absentee ballot is done with the Federal Post Card Application, or FPCA. The Federal Voting Assistance Program, or FVAP, lays out requirements state by state. Find your state here to learn what next steps to take.
