Love, fame and everything in between: “Daisy Jones & The Six”

by Maya Kaplan

If you’re not nostalgic for the 70’s already, just wait until you watch “Daisy Jones & The Six.” Based on the New York Times bestselling novel, the show follows a fictional rock band through its rise and fall from fame and everything in between. The 10 episodes on Amazon Prime will have you wishing for more and leave you absolutely entranced by this bygone era of rock β€˜n’ roll. Whether you’re drawn in by a love for the 70s, an interest in music or the thrill of forbidden love and romance, “Daisy Jones & The Six” has a way of enchanting any audience.

While the story is about the band as a whole, it centers around two characters: Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne. Daisy falls in love with music from a young age, and whether it be sneaking into backstages of clubs or rooming with rockstars, she will do anything to get as close as she can to the world of rock β€˜n’ roll. With a voice as beautiful as her appearance, it isn’t long before Daisy is noticed. Meanwhile, Billy and his band β€œThe Six” move from their hometown in Pittsburgh to Los Angeles, in the hope of making it big. With the help of producer Teddy Price, the band is on the brink of stardom, until Billy’s troubling relationship with drugs and alcohol lands him in rehab. During the band’s hiatus, Teddy suggests adding Daisy to the band to fill the part of a lead female vocalist. Queue “Daisy Jones & The Six.”

Despite the undeniable vocal chemistry between Daisy and Billy on stage, the relationship between the two is fraught with a strong tension and complexity. Even if you aren’t hooked on rock β€˜n’ roll, the confusing and passionate relationship between Billy and Daisy is enough to keep anyone on their toes.

The true genius of this narrative, however, is not the storyline, but how it is told. The unique interview-style format adds a personal level that is unmatched in many television shows. The characters are complex and flawed and their relationships are realistic and captivating. By letting the characters tell their own stories, the show adds unparalleled depth to each character, giving the audience insight into their thoughts and motivations and subsequently forcing the audience to distinguish truth from the tainted views of possibly unreliable narrators. While this style may seem confusing, the show seamlessly weaves together recounts from the band members and their entourage to create one fluid narrative told from different perspectives.

Watching “Daisy Jones & The Six” is a fascinating show that explores the complexities of fame and the price of success. The masterful portrayal of the time period captures the essence of LA and the 70’s rock scene so vividly that you feel as though they’ve been transported back in time to this era of passion, excitement and promises.
