UCLA softball dominates Washington in a victory of 7-4

On Friday evening, the Bruins hosted the Huskies at home in Easton Stadium. After a wild first inning, the Bruins held onto their momentum to win the game. The Huskies never recovered after the Bruins had six runs in the first inning.

The Bruins’ exploded with six runs in the first, immediately setting the tone for the rest of the game. This offensive strength gave UCLA the support they needed while their defense and pitching remained strong to keep Washington off the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the second inning, UCLA’s Savannah Pola led things off with a hit to reach first base and was followed by Jordan Woolery, who then reached first base while advancing Pola to second. A deep hit from Megan Grant was caught in the outfield, marking the second out.

Washington’s first significant scoring opportunity of the game came in the top of the fifth inning, when they had all the bases loaded, and their batter hit a deep ball; however, UCLA made a saving catch, giving Washington their third out of the inning. Washington still remained scoreless at this point.

UCLA answered back immediately. In the bottom of the fifth, Grant sent the ball soaring over the right-center fence for a solo home run, extending the lead to 7-0.

Washington tried to get on the board in the sixth with one of their players reaching first base, but any hopes were quickly extinguished as she was tagged out later in the inning.

In the top of the seventh, however, Washington finally scored, hoping to defeat the Bruins. Down by seven, the Huskies came alive and got four runs in a sudden burst of offense that rattled the Bruins. But UCLA’s defense remained strong to end the game and halt the comeback.

Though the final inning added some late points, UCLA’s early dominance proved too much to overcome as they walked away with a 7-4 victory.

The Bruins will host the Huskies back-to-back Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. They hope to keep their winning streak against Washington as tonight recorded their tenth consecutive win.
