by Mercedes Schmits-Salazar

On Friday night, No. 2 UCLA faced No. 10 Stanford for the second night in a row in Pauley Pavilion. It was a very tight game all throughout the night, as both teams played well and did not allow a large lead from the other. UCLA had their momentum and kept it throughout the whole night, defeating Stanford in a three-set game. The scores were: set 1: 22-25, set 2: 22-25, set 3: 22-25. Ultimately, UCLA won 0-3.

The first set was tight as both teams earned points and continued tying the game. Toward the end of the set, Stanford called a timeout with the score at 20-22, still trailing behind UCLA. The set then tied at 22-22, and UCLA called a timeout. UCLA then scored the next three points to secure the first win of the night.

UCLA was able to get the first point of the second set, but Stanford seemed to quickly get the lead as they were already at 9-5 with a 3-0 scoring run. Soon the score was 13-8, with Stanford having the largest lead of the set. After falling behind Stanford, UCLA finally began to catch up – only behind by two points at 13-11. The set was later tied at 14-14, and the teams were tied again at 21-21. UCLA got the next two points to take the lead. The Bruins won their second set of the night at 22-25. Cooper Robinson led the Bruins with 11 kills at this point.

The third set started off with Stanford getting the first point after Andrew Rowan missed his serve. Robinson got the first kill of the set for the Bruins, and now UCLA was leading 1-2. After not getting a single kill the entire night, Cameron Thorne finally got his first early in the third set. He finished the night off with five kills. UCLA now had a 3-0 scoring run to bring them to 7-11. As the set neared its end, both teams were still very close at 17-20, but at the end UCLA won the third and final set of the game at 22-25 after Thorne got the last kill in to secure the win. For the second night in a row, Robinson led the Bruins with 15 kills, after leading the Bruins with 16 kills Thursday night.

The Bruins are headed on the road next to play Vanguard on Thursday. They are on a six-game winning streak, which they hope to continue as they head to Costa Mesa.
