As the new year brings New Year’s resolutions, be prepared to add a new bingeable TV show to your list. A load of new and exciting TV shows are coming in 2024, varying from action, drama, comedy and more. As January comes to a close, grab some popcorn and check out the best shows released this month and what’s to come the rest of the winter. Happy binge-watching!
1. The Brother’s Sun
Netflix really upped their game when they released “The Brother’s Sun,” a crime drama show, on Jan. 4 of this year. It follows the son of a Taiwanese gang leader who must travel to Los Angeles to protect his mother and oblivious, improv-loving brother after their family is threatened by a mysterious group of assassins. Not only is the show action-packed and thrilling, it also delves into aspects of Taiwanese culture and adds a flair of humor to every episode. The show stars Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Michele Yeoh, alongside Justin Chein and Sam Li. If you’re looking for a well-casted, exciting show that has it all, this is the one.
2. Echo
Obsessed with the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Then you may already know that a new Marvel series, “Echo,” released its first episode on Jan. 9th on Disney+ and Hulu. “Echo” revives the original comic book story of Maya Lopez, a deaf, Native American woman who possesses superhuman powers as she strives to reconnect with her indigenous roots and avenge the death of her father. Maya originally appeared in Hawkeye and continues her journey in Disney’s first TV-MA series. Played by Alaqua Cox, this monumental series about a resilient woman is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.
3. Masters of the Air
In case you missed the Westwood premiere, “Masters of the Air” is an Apple TV+ drama series following aerial wars of WWII. Based on a novel, the plot focuses on a band of airmen from the 100th Bomb Group form bonds and risk everything. If you loved “Elvis” or “Saltburn,” you’re in luck — this intense and visually stunning show stars Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan, alongside other co-stars Callum Turner and Anthony Boyle. Not to mention, the show is brought to you by Steven Speilberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman and already boasts an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes — do you even need to know more? The first episode was released on Jan. 26, so start watching!
4. Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Everybody knows the classic “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” movie with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but welcome a new family of Smiths this year starring Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) and Maya Erskine (from “Pen15”), who seem to have real chemistry. The show will be a comedy-spy series following two strangers who begin a fake marriage for a mission from their spy agency when they start to catch feelings along with the bad guys. The first season was released on Prime Video on Feb. 2, so check it out!
5. Avatar: The Last Airbender (Live-Action)
Just shy of twenty years after the animated show debuted, this widely anticipated live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” will be airing its pilot episode on Feb. 22 on Netflix. If you haven’t seen the original show, Avatar follows Aang, the world’s long-lost and last airbender who must master the four elements — fire, earth, air and water — with the help of his friends to save the element-divided world from the Fire Nation’s impending attacks. This classic story coupled with a young and talented cast (Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Dallas Liu) is sure to enchant you, or at least be better than the original live-action movie (5% on Rotten Tomatoes … yikes!).
6. The Regime
Want to know what it takes to rule a nation? “The Regime,” a drama miniseries coming exclusively to (HBO) Max, is about exactly what the name suggests. Although not many details about the show are out yet, the official synopsis claims the Regime will explore an authoritarian rule unfolding within a European palace. Featuring a stellar ensemble, the cast includes top performers such as Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne and the incredible Hugh Grant – ensuring you won’t want to miss this show.
