If the Oscar’s season puts you in the mood to hit the theaters – you’re in luck. This month will be full of exciting new releases – from Disney’s highly anticipated Snow White live-action remake to award-winning director Steven Soderbergh’s next thriller, starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender. Here’s a preview of what’s hitting the big screen this March.
1. “Mickey 17” – March 7
This sci-fi, comedy starring Robert Pattinson is based on the 2022 novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton. It tells the story of Mickey Barnes, a man sent on a deadly mission to colonize the ice world Niflheim. The twist? Every time Mickey dies, his body is regenerated and he maintains a majority of his memories. While it has not yet been released globally, its debut among critics has generally received strong ratings, including an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This film will be the first feature film directed by acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho since his 2019 Best Picture win for “Parasite”. “Mickey 17” is sure to be a memorable follow-up – hopefully after one watch, not 17.
2. “The Electric State” – March 14
This film had its world premiere last month at Grauman’s Egyptian Theater here in Los Angeles, but it will be released March 14 on Netflix Directed by “Avengers: Endgame” directors Anthony and Joe Russo, this film was loosely based on a 2018 graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It follows orphaned teen Michelle, played by “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown as she teams up with a robot and a smuggler with a wise-cracking sidekick on a mission to find her long-lost brother. The movie’s star-studded cast also boasts Chris Pratt and Ke Huy Quan Robots seem to be a hot topic right now – not surprising considering the rise of artificial intelligence. This March, “The Electric State” will bring its own take to the conversation with a film that reckons with the clash between technology and humanity.
3. “Black Bag” – March 14
If science fiction’s not your thing, “Black Bag” will add some variety to your watchlist this month. Written by David Koepp, this thriller follows agent George Woodhouse and his wife Kathryn, who is suspected of treason. “Black Bag” will be Steven Soderbergh’s second release this year and a majority of reviews from early screenings have been positive. Time will tell if Soderbergh secures yet another hit, but momentum will definitely be on his side when this film hits theaters in two weeks. If you’re looking for a spy drama to keep you on the edge of your seat, “Black Bag” won’t miss the mark.
4. “Opus” – March 14
If you’re a fan of other A24 productions like “Lady Bird”, “Everything, Everywhere All at Once”, “Past Lives” and many more – “Opus” might be for you. The film features rising star Ayo Edibiri paired with industry veteran John Malkovich taking on the leading roles. Edibiri plays a young writer traveling to a remote compound where a legendary pop icon, played by Malkovich, has disappeared for the last 30 years. Fueled by Mark Anthony Green’s direction, Edibiri’s talent and Malkovich’s experience, this movie is sure to entertain as it explores the line between celebrity following and cult.
5. “Snow White” – March 21
Finally, the fairest of them all – or at least the most highly anticipated. Disney’s live-action musical remake of “Snow White”, starring Rachel Zegler, will at last hit the big screen. Zegler sparked a social media controversy with critical comments she made about the original 1937 film, not long after the movie had already received some backlash for its casting. This put the darker history of Disney movies back in the spotlight, even as remakes such as this one have driven efforts to change this narrative by promoting diversity and inclusivity. Despite the off-screen drama, “Snow White” is expected to open at $53 million at the North American box office. Maybe this “Snow White” will be the fairest of them all.
