Why watch movies?

by Tai Chiou

A love letter to movies:

Most call them a form of entertainment; I’m guilty of it. There’s nothing better than laying on your comfy bed or couch and putting on something that can entertain you for hours.

Some movies will have you laugh hysterically with your friends and even when you don’t know all the plot points, you can still figure out what’s happening.

They are a spectacular way to pass the time.

Some of my favorites include:

  • “Pain & Gain” (2013)
  • “The Bounty Hunter” (2010)
  • “Super Troopers” (2001)

Many movies are relatable, and cite great films as huge sources of inspiration.

These movies may take up more of your attention span but trust me, it’s worth it in the end. A movie done right can motivate you to get up from your bed and follow your dreams!

Movies like this transcend the category of just “entertainment” and enter a genre I call “too bloody real.”

Some of my favorite “too bloody real” movies are:

  • “Howl’s Moving Castle” (2004)
  • “The Truman Show” (1998)
  • “The Pursuit of Happyness” (2006)

Then, there are the people who enjoy movies so much that they call themselves “film buffs.” But I prefer to call them “film addicts” instead, and I am one myself.

For these people, film is a form of religion.

Some movies that “film buffs” may like include:

  • “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” (2019)
  • “Schindler’s List” (1993)
  • “Past Lives” (2023)

So what kind of movies are your favorite to watch?
