Ruby Slipper is an all-American diner perfect for families, friends and other large groups. While this restaurant is surely a feast for the eyes with the retro cartoon playing on the television and eclectic decorations covering the walls, customers line up for the actual feast; breakfast. While classic brunch favorites such as French toast and traditional southern affairs like biscuits and gravy are prominent dishes on the menu, Ruby Slipper specializes in combining these two mid-morning meals. The Chicken St. Charles, for example, takes the standard brunch Benedict and adds a southern flair by topping a buttermilk biscuit with fried chicken and pork cream sauce. No matter what customers are hungry for, Ruby Slipper will serve up a delicious dish.
Gavin Meichelbock: A solid place for a classic Southern breakfast. I got the Chicken St. Charles and enjoyed it. Because the fried chicken was lightly battered, it wasn’t heavy but still had a good texture. The biscuits were good, doughy not flakey, but that’s just preference. The sauce was super decent and cheesy and was the highlight of the dish. I will say though, the eggs were overcooked so there was no runny yolk. The beignets were great. Because they are small, they were able to get nice and crispy. They were not overly doughy and not too sweet. If you do want a sweeter experience, the apple beignets are worth getting. It comes with a sweeter experience of cream cheese dip and sliced apples. It is super rich and filling whereas the regular beignets were more akin to a light snack. The Ruby Slipper is a great spot if you find yourself in the area.
Finn Martin: Plenty of good options on the menu to branch out and to move away from the heaviness one dish may have. I deeply enjoyed trying the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were prepared just right and their fresh puffiness balanced well with the creamy and light gravy. The bacon and eggs were a good accompaniment. Get yourself a NOLA-styled coffee to help wash this meal down.
Charity Brown: If you get anything on the Ruby Slipper menu, you must try the candy apple beignets! They were delicious and far from the original! Paired with sweet creamy sauce and apple slices, they tasted like a deconstructed apple pie! They were perfectly topped with powdered sugar and whipped cream, definitely a seasonal must-try.
Emily Chandler: A great place for either breakfast or lunch, the menu offers a variety of classic choices such as pancakes, eggs Benedict and French toast. There are also a few different beignets that can accompany your food. Though the classic beignets are always enjoyable, the candy apple beignets are a fun twist to add to your breakfast. If you are a coffee lover, the iced vanilla coffee, though a bit overly sweet, is a great way to start your day.
