The Getty View Trail, a 2.6-mile route that is part of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Lands, runs along the 405 freeway, across from the Getty Center. As the closest hiking trail to UCLA’s campus, it is convenient for most Bruins and can be reached by biking, a short bus ride or driving. The trail could be considered a low-to-moderate hike that takes an average of 1 hour to complete.
The trail offers more than just beautiful views and a place to run. During your visit you might get lucky enough to encounter a friendly group of dogs taking a stroll with their human chaperone.
The trail offers a view of the Getty Center, the infamous 405 and the Getty View Park. On the west side of the trail, one can admire the Getty Center and the Pacific Ocean in the background if the weather allows for a clear sky. Some areas throughout the hike are quiet and far away from the freeway noise, giving an out-of-town experience.
One of the highlights of the Getty View Trail is the tree at the top of the hike. This tree is the lone survivor of the 2019 Getty Fire, a wildfire that burned around 745 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains.
When reaching the peak of the trail, one can rest under the tree and enjoy the awesome views. To the north, you can see the traffic on the 405 freeway, the Mountaingate Country Club just across the freeway, and the Getty Center if you glance south towards Santa Monica or Venice Beach.
A view of the Mountaingate Country Club can be seen from under the tree at the top of the trail. The Mountaingate Club is a premier golf and lifestyle club that is situated at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains.
Surprisingly, these huge cracks on the trail can be spotted in the middle of a hike. It seems as though the latest rains have taken a toll on the hillsides and the hike might soon be too dangerous to attempt. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed and hope safety measures can be taken without closing the trail.
