Device detox: How to create a new reality in the digital age

by Carol Nasr

Our phones have taken over every element of our lives. Many of us have forgotten the true beauties of life outside of a screen. It is important to disconnect and unplug from the notifications and scrolling that overstimulate our lives. One suggestion is a device detox which can help us reset and make us more mindful.

Something that I love to do to separate my time from my devices is to silence my notifications or even fully shut my device down when not in use. This simple action can calm down your thoughts as well as your body. Sometimes, even leaving your phone at home if you don’t need it can be a great option for many, especially on slower days. If none of these methods work, there are helpful apps that can assist in limiting your device usage.

The benefits of taking time away from your device or having some sort of detox from your device are plentiful. You start to become more aware of details on your way to class, such as the sounds of nature, the vibrancy of colors and more. It will be a time where you can practice mindfulness and really tune into yourself and the environment around you.

The best part of taking time away from your phone is the break from social media. You can even redefine this detox to strictly a social media detox which has similar effects. You have the opportunity to fully experience life without picking up your phone in the middle of lunch or during a new activity to document the moment; instead, you cherish it. What difference does life without social media make? It creates less anxiety, improved self-esteem and the ability to feel more present.

Without this habit of having your phone out, you will find more time to read, exercise, stroll in nature or pick up a new project. You will have time to reflect on life and make the changes you want to see. You may even influence those around you and create a new unplugged hangout, resulting in you learning more about each other, which you may never have done before. If you are worried about missing out on things, it can be helpful to set designated periods of time where you check your phone.

Remember, a device detox does not mean giving up devices forever, but rather creating a balance where you don’t feel indebted to your device. Try leaving your phone at home or minimizing your attachments for a new outlook on life and you will definitely see positive changes as you focus on your well-being.
