Here’s a recap of UCLA sports this week:
Men’s basketball dominates
The Bruins got two statement wins this week before entering the Big Ten Tournament as a six seed. UCLA (21-10, 13-7 Big Ten) beat No. 9 Nebraska (26-5, 15-5 Big Ten) by 20 and holds an impressive 17-1 record at home.
Then, UCLA held onto another commanding victory at rival USC (18-13, 7-13 Big Ten), 89-68, sweeping them this season. Senior guard Donovan Dent led the way, scoring an impressive 25 points on 11-15 FG shooting.
Women’s basketball wins the Big Ten Tournament
As the No. 1 seed, the Bruins (31-1, 18-0 Big Ten) first took down No. 8 seed Washington (21-10, 10-8 Big Ten), 78-60 to reach the championship game. They then destroyed No. 2 seed Iowa (26-6, 15-3 Big Ten), 96-45, setting the largest margin of victory over an AP top-10 ranked NCAA team and securing their second consecutive tournament title.
The Bruins now await for Selection Sunday on March 15 to find out their seeding for the NCAA tournament.
Jordan Chiles claims another perfect 10.000 on bars
No. 5 UCLA (14-2, 9-0 Big Ten) defeated No. 10 Stanford (7-4, 5-0 ACC) in their matchup this week, 197.775-197.425, bouncing back from last week’s season low.
Chiles now has 17 perfect 10’s in her career, and six came from this season alone. She took the bars and vault titles. Freshman Ashlee Sullivan also recorded a career-best 39.325 across her three events.
UCLA will host Utah at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday.
Baseball wins three consecutive games against Ohio State
This past weekend, No. 1 UCLA (14-2, 3-0 Big Ten) cruised past Ohio State (5-9, 0-3 Big Ten) three times, sweeping them in the process (11-1, 19-6 and 10-7) to start conference play.
The Bruins put on an offensive show for all the games and their next game will be this Tuesday against UC Irvine as they look to continue off their hot start.
Softball completes the sweep against Wisconsin
No. 8 UCLA softball (21-3, 3-0 Big Ten) extended their win streak to 15 while starting off conference play with three consecutive wins against Wisconsin (14-10, 0-3 Big Ten). The scores are, 14-5, 8-0, 16-9, showcasing a dominant performance on both ends.
UCLA will host Michigan State this weekend with three more games.
Men’s volleyball remains undefeated after beating rival USC
The Bruins (16-0, 5-0 MPSF) took down the Trojans (8-3, 1-2 MPSF) in four sets, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16, 25-19, Friday night.
Senior setter Zach Rama led UCLA with 19 kills and sophomore outside hitter Sean Kelly had 17 kills. Senior setter Andrew Rowan also recorded an impressive 47 assists.
UCLA will play next in the OUTRIGGER invitational against No. 16 Lewis on March 12.
Men’s tennis secures their two victories on the road
The Bruins (8-3, 2-0 Big Ten) put up two decisive victories this week to start off conference play.
On Friday, they took down Indiana (6-5, 0-2 Big Ten) with a score of 4-2. Then, on Sunday, they defeated Purdue (4-7, 0-2 Big Ten), 6-1, completing the road sweep.
UCLA will take on rival USC this Friday, March 13th, at home.
Women’s tennis bounces back after a loss
No. 6 UCLA (7-3, 1-1 Big Ten) had a disappointing road loss against Wisconsin (8-3, 1-1 Big Ten) after a close battle with a score of 4-3 for their Big Ten opener.
However, they were able to bounce back with a win, 4-1, against Minnesota (9-6, 0-2 Big Ten). The Bruins will be back in action this weekend against Penn State and Ohio State at home to hopefully extend their new win streak.
No. 1 Stanford edges out No. 2 UCLA women’s water polo
After a tight battle in the fourth quarter, the Bruins (12-2, 2-1 MPSF) lost at home to Stanford, 10-9, giving the Cardinal (9-0, 3-0 MPSF) the regular season sweep.
UCLA looks to bounce back when it hosts No. 14 Princeton this Thursday.
