Winter quarter at UCLA: How to enjoy life without letting seasonal depression take over

by Carol Nasr

Winter quarter at UCLA can feel like a shock. The days are shorter, the weather is colder and motivation suddenly feels harder to find. Add midterms, long walks to class and gray mornings, and it’s easy for seasonal depression to start creeping in. The good news is that winter quarter doesn’t have to feel miserable if you’re intentional about how you move through it.

One of the biggest things that helps is staying connected. It’s tempting to isolate when it’s cold and gloomy, but making plans with friends can completely change your mood. Study together at Powell Library, grab coffee in Westwood or take a walk around campus when the sun comes out. Even small social moments can make the quarter feel lighter.

Getting outside also matters more than you think. UCLA’s campus is still beautiful in the winter, and taking advantage of sunny afternoons can boost your energy. Sitting on Janss Steps, walking through Dickson Court or even just eating lunch outside instead of indoors can help reset your mindset.

Movement is another key factor. You don’t need intense workouts. A hot girl walk around campus, a yoga class at John Wooden Center or stretching in your dorm room can help release stress and improve your mood. Consistency matters more than intensity.

It also helps to romanticize the season a little. Lean into cozy habits like making warm drinks or grabbing hot chocolate, wearing outfits you feel good in or creating a nighttime routine that helps you unwind. Having something to look forward to, even something small, can make a big difference.

Lastly, give yourself grace. Winter quarter is tough for a lot of people (usually the toughest), and it’s okay if you’re not at your best yet. Focus on taking care of yourself, asking for help when you need it and remembering that spring quarter is coming. Sometimes just getting through winter is an accomplishment on its own!
