In a world that actively promotes cafe culture festering homogenous work environments with masses of people huddled up in front of computer screens, draining coffee to force their slowly dwindling cognitive capacity to work, the powerful benefits of working in a naturalistic setting in boosting mental ability and well-being is often overlooked.
The Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden is a hidden gem within the treasure trove of natural wealth on campus. Home to about 3000 unique plant species, it’s considered a living museum of the university. With spacious wooden benches and lots of seating peppered around the heart of the garden, it provides an energizing environment to study or work in. Taking breaks in between long study sessions by walking through the scenic trails of the garden as the sound of water gushes by can cleanse your ears and rejuvenate your mind. The colorful flowers that bloom are not just visual treats, but a constant sources of joy, adding romance and beauty to everyday life.
In an increasingly technology-dependent world, it’s important to remain tethered to the real one. So, the next time someone tells you to go touch some grass, hit up Janss Steps. The surrounding acres of lush green grass provide the ideal setting to lock in on your work under a warm blanket of sunshine. Bonus points if you go Sundays when it’s less crowded. You can even carry a blanket and some snacks to have a little picnic.
Inspiration enhances productivity. The Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden on North Campus is an iconic UCLA spot to invigorate and impassion your eyes with truly magnificent art pieces. The creators of the garden intended the art to be smoothly integrated with the landscape, creating a museum without walls. The gentle sloping terrain is home to South African coral trees, sycamore, red woods, canary pines and eucalyptus. Working amidst the statues in a rich green setting not only nurtures creativity and innovation but inspire you to think outside the box.
Nature not only heals, but energizes. Research has time and time again emphasized the role of nature in boosting cognitive performance by improving memory, reducing stress and inspiring creativity. I think it’s important to leverage the benefits of being in a naturally well-endowed campus like UCLA and making the most of it by spending time out in the sun, exploring these beautiful green spaces.
