Up and down the PCH: The best spots along California’s most iconic highway

by Kaylynn Yang

Highways don’t often come to mind when we think of scenic spots or community hubs. But just one drive along California’s Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH, might change your mind. Stretching 655.8 miles along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, Highway 1 is the embodiment of “California Dreamin’.” Rife with breathtaking ocean views and dramatic cliffs, PCH is known for its unbelievable natural scenery.

However, the magic of PCH is much more than the view from the driver’s seat. It has become a gateway into California’s vibrant coastal culture. From nestling revered neighborhood cafes and sublime art galleries to historical surf shops and boutiques galore, it is what lines PCH that truly captures the essence of California and its famous coastal communities.

Here are a few spots you should visit the next time you drive the 1.

Sugar n’ Spice | Balboa Island

Home of the original frozen banana, this local favorite is unbeatable if you have a sweet tooth. Their signature banana bars, or Balboa Bars, are hand-dipped in chocolate and finished with toppings of your choice, creating a beloved desert and cherished tradition for over a century.

Nora’s | Carmel

A quaint restaurant focused on serving comfort food.

AhBA | South Laguna Beach

Opening its doors in 2019, AhBA Laguna Beach has quickly become a community gem serving classic American dishes. Their signature AhbA Burger features a double wagyu smash, but locals know that the real standout is the Caesar salad, which is served with an entire head of romaine lettuce.

Sea N’ Soul Surf | Malibu

A coffee and surf shop located right by Zuma Beach. The perfect two for one combo.

The Georgian | Santa Monica

Since 1933, the Georgian Hotel has been a distinguishing landmark of Santa Monica. The hotel is painted a bright Tiffany blue and looks straight out of a Wes Anderson movie. But, the real deal is Gallery 33, the art gallery hidden in the back of the Georgian, filled with beautiful modern pieces that represent the local community of Californian artists.

Point Lobos | Carmel-By-The-Sea

Labeled the “Crown Jewel of the California State Park System,” Point Lobos’ natural beauty will leave you speechless. If you’re lucky, you might even spot herds of harbor seals lounging along the shore, a living testament to the flourishing and untamed coastal ecosystems of California.

Lido Marina Village | Newport Beach

Charming Mediterranean architecture located right by the Balboa peninsula, Lido Marina Village is a waterside plaza with small businesses, curated boutiques, restaurants and ice-cream parlors.

Southswell | Laguna Beach

Truly a Laguna Beach classic, Southswell is the best place for soft serve ice cream. Beyond the classic swirl, they hand dip your ice cream in chocolate and have toppings ranging from toasted marshmallow fluff to graham cracker crisps making the perfect desert after a day at the beach.

Downtown Manhattan Beach Farmers Market | Manhattan Beach

Every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Manhattan Beach’s local farmers, artisans and specialty ranchers come together and create a market that is representative of the tight-knit community that lives along the PCH.

Table Rock Beach | Laguna Beach

A hidden gem known mostly to locals, Table Rock Beach is the epitome of coastal California with beachside cliffs and sparkling aquamarine ocean. You can also swim around the left cliff to reach a hidden beach tucked on the other side.

Truly Pizza | Dana Point

A classic artisanal pizzeria focused on sourcing locally and supporting the farmers within the South Orange County community.

These spots all but assure an incredible road trip along California’s Golden Coast, which, as Katy Perry can attest to, is second to none.
