A quick glimpse of everything that happened in UCLA sports this past week
Men’s basketball sets a new record
After a loss to No. 15 Michigan State last Tuesday, the Bruins celebrated a hard-earned victory over No. 10 Illinois after senior guard Donovan Dent scored a buzzer-beater. Last night, the Bruins set a record for the largest comeback in UCLA men’s basketball history, also the second largest in the Big Ten history.
Women’s basketball are Big Ten champions
UCLA was on fire, with a dominant win over Indiana, marking a record for seven Bruins scoring in the double digits. Senior center Lauren Betts dropped her tenth double-double this season, with 16 points and 14 rebounds. After winning against Washington on Feb. 19, the Bruins earned their title as Big Ten champions in the regular season, and clinched the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Championship Tournament.
Men’s volleyball stays undefeated
After a huge win against California State University, Long Beach on Feb. 6, the Bruins hosted the Beach at Pauley Pavilion on Feb. 20 for a rematch, and won another thrilling match in four sets.
Women’s water polo jumps right back
No. 2 UCLA lost just shy of one goal to No. 1 Stanford in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. However, the Bruins came back and won their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, or MPSF, game against No. 4 California in overtime.
Baseball keeps on swinging
This past week, the Bruins took their first loss of the season to UC San Diego, down by only one home run. The Bruins kicked it up a notch, taking the win from Tulane, and No. 7 TCU twice, after sophomore pitcher Wylan Moss pitched nine straight strikeouts for a close out on night two.
Softball is on a roll
Playing six softball games in one week is impressive, and winning all six even more so. The Bruins showed true grit against No. 10 LSU in a mercy-rule win, Auburn, No. 14 Duke, Fresno State, and then No. 13 South Carolina.
Men’s tennis drops to USC
After a complete shutout at the Los Angeles Tennis Center against UNLV, the Bruins fell to the No. 14 rivals across town, 3-4.
Women’s Tennis
Two games were meant to be played, but the Los Angeles rain postponed the first game of the week against LMU. However, the No. 8 Bruins still snagged a win over No. 14 Pepperdine last Friday, Feb. 20.
