On Saturday afternoon at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, UCLA men’s basketball was unable to overcome a dominant first half by Iowa, falling 74–61 in a hard-fought matchup that saw the Bruins battle back but ultimately come up short. After trailing by as many as 24 points in the opening period, UCLA showed resilience and urgency in the second half, cutting the deficit to four, but Iowa’s late execution sealed the game.
The opening half was controlled largely by Iowa, as the Hawkeyes capitalized on turnovers and perimeter shooting to build momentum early. UCLA struggled to find offensive rhythm, while Iowa steadily extended its lead due to strong contributions from Bennett Stirtz, Alvaro Folgueiras and Isaia Howard. By halftime, UCLA trailed 40–22 after Iowa closed the period on a turnaround jumper by Howard.
The second half told a different story. UCLA came out aggressive, forcing turnovers and pushing the pace in transition. Senior guard Donovan Dent sparked the comeback by scoring consistently in the paint and on fast breaks, while senior guard Skyy Clark, Redshirt sophomore guard Brandon Williams and fifth-year guard Jamar Brown added key shots. The Bruins trimmed the deficit to as little as four points at 61–57 with just over four minutes remaining and put real pressure on the home team.
However, Iowa responded at the free-throw line and in transition. Stirtz and Howard made crucial plays down the stretch, and a late three-pointer by Stirtz sealed the 74–61 victory. Despite UCLA’s strong second-half push, Iowa’s early cushion was too much to overcome.
UCLA is now ranked #42 in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rankings as they look to quickly regroup after the loss and prepare for their next matchup against Wisconsin on Jan. 6 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
