UC sets world record with Nobel Prize haul, serves as testament in the face of research cuts

Oct. 6 to 8, as Nobel Prize winners were announced at the break of dawn, we heralded a new era for academia as UC-affiliated faculty and alumni earned five Nobel laureates — making the UC the university system awarded with the highest number of Nobel Prizes in a single year.

Taking a closer peek into this year’s prize-winning roster: Monday, Oct. 6, Frederick J. Ramsdell, a UCLA and UCSD alumnus, won the Nobel Prize in medicine. The following day, we hit the trifecta as UC Berkeley emeritus professor John Clarke, UC Santa Barbara emeritus professor John Martinis and UC Santa Barbara professor Michel Devoret brought home the Nobel Prize for physics . Finally, on Oct. 8, Omar Yaghi, a UC Berkeley chemist (and former UCLA professor), was bestowed the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Emerging victorious across all fields of scientific inquiry, these discoveries include immune system research that translates to life-changing treatments for cancer and sclerosis patients, experiments underpinning today’s most powerful quantum computers and molecular materials that can harvest drinkable water from desert air and capture carbon dioxide; providing solutions for environmental deterioration.

Since 1934, UC faculty has won 75 Nobel Prizes, committing itself to ever-growing standards of academic rigor and breakthroughs. As UC President James B. Milliken stated, “These awards are not only great honors — they are tangible evidence of the work happening across the University of California every day to expand knowledge, test the boundaries of science and conduct research that improves our lives.”

Amid cuts in funding and research restrictions, this triumph serves as a testament to the UC’s sustained commitment to academic calibre and excellence. At the same time, this hallmark acts as a reminder of the crucial role federal funding plays in life-changing research. Nobel laureate Professor Yaghi expressed that federal grants enabled him to venture and pursue a novel course beyond the happenings of mainstream chemistry. “I wanted to do something different and [federal] grants allowed me to do it,” said Yaghi.

As the UC faces a looming threat of delays and federal cuts amid political turmoil, research that is capable of revitalizing the world as we see it is hampered in the process. This causes further uneasiness as the current administration moves to deepen the cuts for federal science agencies. In a campus-wide email sent Oct. 3, President Milliken stated, “Just within the last few days, the administration has announced a plan to impose a myriad of new requirements on universities seeking federal funding, which we will discuss soon with faculty leadership.” He highlighted the gravity of the situation, claiming, “Given the federal government’s actions against Harvard University in a similar situation, this may well represent the greatest threat to the University of California in its 157-year history.”

In honor of protective transformative and restorative research, the University of California has launched the Speak Up for Science campaign, mobilizing faculty members, students and citizens to take action and petition so that Congress rejects cuts in research funding and we can resume delivering excellence to the world.
