With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s almost time to start planning the perfect date. Whether you’re going for something simple and intimate or fun and memorable, UCLA is full of hidden gems that make the ultimate date spot.
1. A peaceful picnic at the Botanical Gardens
A perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, the gardens offer a tranquil, serene environment to unwind, connect and enjoy the beauty of LA’s natural world. Set up a classic picnic with your person, and let the surroundings and peaceful ambiance transport you far from the city.
2. A free movie screening held by UCLA’s Film & Television Archive at the Hammer Museum
If you’re looking for something educational and refreshingly different this Valentine’s Day, UCLA’s Film & Television Archive will be screening “Passion“, at the Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer Museum. This Cantonese-language film explores the melodramatic complexities of love, friendship and passion through the nuanced lens of eastern culture. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Michael Berry, Director of UCLA’s Center for Chinese Studies, and Janet Louie, a Harvard University PhD candidate, making it a distinctive and thoughtful choice for a unique Valentine’s Day date.
3. A study date at the Fowler Museum’s courtyard
My personal favorite hidden gem on campus, the courtyard at the Fowler Museum offers a picturesque and serene space, perfect for the ultimate study date. Centered around a Tuscan-inspired fountain and surrounded by romantic picnic tables, lush greenery and beaming sunlight, it is a space that invites enjoyment in all forms. Any date is sure to go swimmingly at this beautifully designed spot.
4. Lounge out on Janss Steps
A classic for a reason, the green slopes by Janss Steps are a favorite among students, faculty and visitors alike. This Valentine’s Day, lay out a blanket, soak up the sunshine and spend the afternoon with your special someone, surrounded by laughter, love and the beaming radiant energy of campus.
5. A free planetarium show at UCLA’s Planetarium
Tucked away on the eighth floor of the Mathematical Sciences building, the planetarium is a romantic getaway for an unforgettable date. While free showings are held only on Wednesdays, you can celebrate Valentine’s Day a little early, or a little late, by experiencing this campus gem together.
6. Catch an award-winning performance at UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance
Although not on Feb. 14 itself, UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance, or CAP, is holding a live jazz performance by Grammy nominated artist, Alfredo Rodriguez, and Pedrito Martinez at The Nimoy in Westwood on Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. Celebrate Valentine’s Eve with mambo grooves and rhythmic melodies with performances on piano, percussion and vocals. Known for their rare live performances and trailblazing contributions to Afro-Cuban music, this performance is romantic, exciting and makes for an unforgettable musical evening.
