Taking advantage of spring as a UCLA student

by Trisha Santhrupth

Spring adds a certain magic into the air each time it graces campus. Warm sunshine cascades across the bricks, the air is mellow and sweet and lush greenery creeps back into every campus courtyard. As flowers bloom in fragrant bursts of colors, being outside starts to feel more like a necessity than a luxury. Here are some of the best ways to soak it all in this spring season.

Pack a picnic up and sit outside at Janss Steps. What better way to spend a lazy spring morning than in the sunshine and open air with your friends? You can even make a real occasion out of it with fresh fruit, pastries, good coffee and nowhere to be. Bring a frisbee or a deck of cards, and let the afternoon stretch out at its own pace. Stay long enough to watch the steady rhythm of campus life pass by, students crossing the quad, music drifting in the air and sunlight slowly shifting across the grass. It is one of the simplest ways to enjoy the season while truly experiencing core campus energy.

The UCLA Mathias Botanical Garden also offers a perfect spring escape for those who are looking for a slower tempo to ease into spring. Wind your way through its natural landscape and let the greenery do the work. Additionally, it also doubles as a pleasant study spot. So find a quiet bench, grab some iced coffee and settle in for a few productive hours surrounded by a heavenly backdrop. Pause between assignments to wander through cool, shaded paths and listen the chirping of birds or admire the wondrous fragrance that blossoming plants tucked around each turn permeate. It feels worlds away from the bustle of campus, making it an ideal place to recharge.

Spring transforms the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden into something truly incredible. So, coordinate floral outfits with a few friends and take advantage of the lush green landscape set against vivid violet jacaranda blossoms for some gorgeous flicks. The contrast of the solid sculptures, blooming trees and soft afternoon lighting creates one of the most photogenic corners of campus. Even if you are not in the mood for a photoshoot, it is worth lingering there for a while, strolling through the pathways or stretching out on the lawn beneath the blossoms.

When the sun is shining, it’s time to take a break from the gym. Spend your weekend swimming and tanning at Sunset Recreation Center for proper warm-weather reset. Alternatively, you can lace up your sneakers for a run through the hills of Bel-Air. Start your run through the west gate of Bel-Air near the Hitch basketball courts. The route is easily accessible from campus with views that make the uphill trek worth it.

Whether you prefer upbeat and active routines or subscribe to slower, meaningful rhythms, this is your reminder to make the most out of every Spring moment.
