Making Mother’s Day special while you are in college

by Sydney Herstein

Each May, mothers everywhere are celebrated. In-person or not, there are many ways to make your mom feel special, even though you are a busy college student. Here are some easy, yet meaningful methods to celebrate your mom.

Write a card

This holiday is all about showing your mom how loved and appreciated they are to you, and what better way to do this than writing your mom a heartfelt card. These cards are relatively cheap if store-bought, and if not, you can display your creativity by making your own card. Either way, your mom will be so grateful to hear how much you care about her, and that you took the time to write her a message.

Send a thoughtful gift

The perfect pairing with a card is a gift. A gift for Mother’s Day does not need to be anything extravagant – the most important part is that it is something your mom wants and that you put the thought into choosing that present for her. Some ideas include a bouquet of flowers, an arrangement of food, an item or piece of clothing you know your mom has had her eye on or a picture of you and your mom in a frame. These are all great ways to convey your appreciation of your mom, and these items can either be mailed or you can hand-delivered them.

Visit the beach

If you are able to spend Mother’s Day in-person with your mom, consider taking advantage of the beach amidst the warm weather that is predicted in the coming days and weeks. Of course, you should ensure that this is an excursion that your mom enjoys. To make this gift even more meaningful, consider packing a picnic lunch. You can even include a hand-written card, too!

Make food reservations

Another idea for how to celebrate Mother’s Day if you are able to see your mom in-person is by taking her out for food. While brunch is a traditional time to eat on this holiday, your mom would appreciate being treated to a meal at any time of the day. Some restaurants might have pre-set menus for this special day. Consider writing a card for your mom or bringing flowers with you to make the celebration even more meaningful.

No matter where you are, there is always a way to ensure that your mom knows how much she means to you. Some simple planning on your part can make your mother feel so special and appreciated, especially considering how busy you are at UCLA. Whether a phone call or a trip to the beach, your mom is guaranteed to feel the love this Mother’s Day.
