Campus news: UCLA professor elected to National Academy of Engineering

On Tuesday, UCLA professor Xiaochun Li was elected to the National Academy of Engineering for his innovations in manufacturing through nanotechnology. The academy is an independent institution that uses its expertise to provide advice on engineering and technology issues, most notably to the U.S. government. Election to the academy is one of the highest honors an engineer can receive.

Local news: Panorama High students treated after pepper spray release

Panorama High School students experienced throat pain and dizziness on Wednesday after an accidental pepper spray release, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Within hours, 28 students were assessed, and 14 were considered to be in good condition and returned to their parents. Those unaffected were also released.

State news: Investigation into Eaton fire evacuations

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on Thursday an investigation into the response to the Eaton Fire with concerns of potential race, age or disability discrimination. Bonta said his investigation will focus on West Altadena, a historically Black neighborhood that reportedly experienced late evacuation notices compared to other neighborhoods impacted by the fire. 

National news: EPA revokes greenhouse gas finding

On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced that the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, revoked its 2009 finding that greenhouse gases endanger public health. This finding allowed the EPA to limit sources of greenhouse gas emissions such as vehicles and power plants. With the finding revoked, the EPA’s legal backing for regulating greenhouse gas emissions has been removed.
