Hidden study spots in Westwood

by Cass Rubio

As college students, finding the perfect study spot is like finding a needle in a haystack. Our campus can get crowded and noisy, making it difficult to concentrate.

Luckily, Westwood offers a variety of alternative off-campus study spots.

1. Ministry of Coffee
Ministry of Coffee offers a popular Aussie-style menu and a cozy atmosphere, making it a great study spot for students.

Even during peak hours, it remains relatively quiet. Students often wear headphones and work on group projects in low voices. There are both inside and outside seating options, and they have cushioned chairs, a communal table and cozy stools, providing plenty of spots to study.

2. Espresso Profeta
Espresso Profeta is a cozy, off-campus coffeehouse that can serve as a student study spot. The seating includes comfortable indoor tables with vintage decor and a spacious outdoor patio.

Their free Wi-Fi makes it a great place for studying or reading. The welcoming baristas add to the charm, creating a lively environment that fosters productivity and a refreshing break from campus life.

3. Los Angeles Public Library – Westwood Branch
The Westwood branch of the Los Angeles Public Library offers a distraction-free environment that is perfect for studying. With free Wi-Fi, ample seating and a calm atmosphere, it’s an ideal spot for assignments, reading or exam prep.

The library accommodates individual and group study needs and there is no pressure to make purchases, making it budget-friendly for students. Its peaceful setting is a great alternative to the campus hustle, but be sure to check the hours before visiting.

4. Denny’s
It might not be the first place you think of, but the Denny’s on Wilshire Boulevard offers 24/7 access to booth seating, affordable coffee and a surprisingly quiet atmosphere during off-peak hours.

Isabella Alioto, a third-year English transfer student, discussed how she doesn’t always have time to study on campus because of living in the apartments.

“One of my favorite spots off-campus is the Ministry of Coffee because the customer service is always great, and the food and coffee are delicious,” Alioto said. “I also think Espresso Profeta is a hidden gem. It’s so cute and perfect for a study sesh.”

When asked about the challenges of studying off-campus, Alioto acknowledged the cost: “Something I don’t like about studying off campus is I usually end up buying food or a beverage in order to do work at cafes. However, the environment is good, and sometimes it’s nice to get off campus for a while.”

Off-campus locations provide a refreshing change, quieter environments and access to great coffee and snacks.

So, the next time you struggle to focus, consider exploring these hidden study spots in Westwood. You might find your new favorite place.
