UCLA is home to highly intellectual students, a university known for its intense academic rigor and prestigious standards for elite research. Groundbreaking investigations and explorations take place on campus every day, and regardless of what they are studying, there is one thing nearly every student carries to their classes and labs without fail: a bag. Some prefer a backpack, others a tote or some other sort of satchel entirely. I decided to take a deeper look into what might (arguably) be the best bag to bring to the best school.
Jessica Navarrete, a second-year transfer psychology student, matched my preference with a backpack for day-to-day use. She cited the simplicity of a backpack and the unique ability to even forget about its companionship in the midst of long, busy schedules. She commented that she “did not need to worry about it sliding off [her] shoulders,” and she appreciated that she could have her “hands free for any necessities” while traveling. Navarrete also added that the choice of a backpack “allowed [her] to store many items without the worry of extra baggage.” In her responses, Navarrete proposed a strong argument for the modesty of a reliable backpack.
Alternatively, third-year political science student Robin Gaudette presented a similarly compelling argument for the use of a shoulder bag. “I prefer to use a sturdy purse or tote bag like a Longchamp because I think it makes my outfits look cuter,” Gaudette said. Gaudette also added that the Los Angeles heat can make for some sweat-inducing days on campus, and she concluded that with a tote or purse, “it’s nice to have nothing on my back in those situations.” While I have been a lifelong backpack supporter, Gaudette’s response inspired me to take a second look at my stance.
Regardless of how anyone brings their supplies to school, the important thing is to show up every day with a positive attitude and a strong work ethic. That said, choosing a bag that better suits one’s lifestyle and preferences can have a positive impact on their experience as a busy student. There are certainly strong arguments for bags to be worn over a shoulder or behind one’s back. Either way, bags can be a great outlet to express a person’s individuality and offer a handy multi-use tool while doing so!
