UCLA is known for its academics, athletics and campus culture, but one of its most important resources often goes unnoticed: the UCLA Community Programs Office, or CPO. In a school as large and fast-paced as UCLA, it’s easy to feel disconnected from the surrounding city. CPO exists to bridge that gap.
The Community Programs Office supports student initiated outreach programs that serve communities throughout Los Angeles. In speaking with student workers at CPO, I learned more about what makes it unique. CPO empowers students to take ownership of their service work. Students aren’t just volunteers; many serve as coordinators, directors and organizers of programs that directly support local schools and neighborhoods. Through CPO, students develop leadership skills, learn how to navigate community partnerships and gain real-world experience beyond the classroom.
CPO materials also emphasize that “getting involved with CPO programs allows students to build leadership skills while also making a real difference in the LA community.”
For many students, joining a CPO program becomes more than just another extracurricular activity. It creates a sense of purpose. It connects academic learning to real impact. It also builds strong relationships with peers who share a commitment to service.
