Il dolce far niente. The sweetness of doing nothing.
It’s an Italian phrase, and a philosophy of unwinding and embracing the beauty of idleness.
Spring break came and went like a long-awaited breath of fresh air, especially after 10 exhausting weeks of lectures, midterms and late night cram sessions. For some Bruins, this pause from school felt scheduled and optimized, though. But what if the most restorative pause is the one where nothing happens at all, and who says that relaxation has to end alongside spring break?
Embracing a dolce far niente lifestyle can be one of the most fulfilling and replenishing things a person can do for themselves — allowing for leisure without the guilt of feeling unproductive. It can take many forms: lounging around half-asleep on a warm afternoon, sipping on a cup of coffee outside or lying on a grassy hill watching clouds drift by. There’s truly no wrong way to experience il dolce far niente, as long as you’re relaxed and feeling serene.
At UCLA, it’s easy to get caught up in constant productivity, but true recharge comes from being present rather than busy. The Italian notion of dolce far niente reminds Bruins that rest and quiet enjoyment are valuable.
Even though spring break has come and gone, its spirit doesn’t have to. Moments of stillness can be found anywhere — in small pauses throughout the day. Here are a few quiet rituals that capture the essence of dolce far niente.
A drink and nowhere to be
Make a cup of coffee, iced tea or lemonade and sit by a window or outside. Just exist for a while. No assignments, no scrolling, no schedule — only a quiet moment to let your mind wander.
Read a page, then stop
Instead of racing to finish a book, read just a page or two and let your mind drift into a daydream afterward. Enjoy the quiet space that reading creates, rather than focusing on the progress of the plot or the determination to reach the final page.
A midday siesta
When the afternoon heat settles in, take a cue from Mediterranean cultures and have a soothing nap. Lying down in a cool room in light cotton clothing while the warmth of the day lulls you into sleep can be one of the simplest ways to reset both mind and body.
Get lost on purpose
Go for a walk without a destination or place in mind. Stroll through quiet corners of UCLA and Westwood or along shaded streets of your hometown, and have a calm moment of observation and reflection.
Bask in a sunbeam
If a ray of sunlight comes through your window, lie on your bed or the floor and just sit in the warmth for a while. Let the light move slowly across the room while you relax and do nothing in particular.
Coffee, sunshine and afternoon naps? I’ll definitely be embracing the sweetness of doing nothing. Wishing all Bruins a healthy rest of spring quarter, filled with renewal and rejuvenation! Slow down, savor the quiet moments and remember that sometimes doing nothing is exactly what you need to recharge and enjoy life a little more.
